Calgary, AB – The program committee of the esteemed SPE Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition (ATCE) has accepted an RGL technical paper on multidirectional DM™ nozzle technology and flow control completions, which will be presented in Dubai, U.A.E., in 21 - 23 September 2021. The flagship SPE event, which attracts industry professionals from around the world, often receives more than 2,500 paper proposals for consideration each year.

The technical paper entitled “A Multi-directional Flow Control Device for Cyclic Steam Stimulation (CSS) Applications” explores the underlying design philosophy, multiphase flow dynamics modelling and application of DM to CSS operations. During the injection stage of CSS operation, the nozzle can deliver an optimized amount of steam into the formation for steam chamber growth in one direction.  Considering many operators inject steam for some wells and produce hydrocarbon in neighbouring ones, being able to choke back steam during the production stage in the opposing direction is another unique feature of the nozzle.

The DM nozzle is believed to be the first FCD that can achieve both supersonic steam injection and steam choking functions in one nozzle. Extensive aerodynamics, multiphase flow and thermodynamics knowledge were utilized for the development of the nozzle.
